New Path to Tofu

IMG_2094

Oooh - Sexy!

Yes, It's the bicycle specific lane on the Manhattan Bridge.
Check it out. Bike icons in both lanes. Woo Hoo.

Of course, I did see about 5 people on foot on the North Path, but who cares. As the weather gets colder, fewer and fewer people cross the bridges any way.

The approach on both sides is suicidal and takes you through some of the worst streets to cycle on, but it's so nice to ride across the river without fear of hitting or being hit by random tourists, kids, sightseers or joggers on the Brooklyn Bridge Footpath.

I love riding on the Brooklyn Bridge, but sometimes the crowds get to be too much. The Manhattan Bridge leads right into the heart of Chinatown, and the best fresh tofu in NY - I only almost got killed three times on my way there.

Not sure if you'll see this as this is an old post, I just stumbled into your blog.

I've just started commuting across the manhattan bridge and LOVE fresh tofu, is there any specific place you'd recommend I stop to shop? I'm still very new to chinatown

Hi Elissa,
I'm a fan of the tofu seller on Grand Street, but there is a caveat...
My favorite is a little open-front shop, two or three doors in on the North side of Grand Street, just West of Bowery. I think it's right next door to the Chinese bakery.
You just ask the (nice) old man, or (cranky) old lady for "One Dollar Tofu", and you get 4 pieces of fresh tofu.
The caveat is...I was just there about 5 days ago and the tofu was different - not bad, but not as good as I'm used to from them, so I'm not sure if someone new is making it, or if it was just a temporary aberration.
Happy Tofu!
